Civil Defence warnings

Some events occur without warning and for these types of emergencies you should be prepared now.

Where possible, the likely occurrence of some events will be broadcast by the media in news and weather bulletins.

These may include:

  • Snow
  • Heavy rain fall
  • Strong wind
  • Coastal storms
  • Flooding
  • Tsunami

Types of warnings to be aware of

Where warning of an imminent risk to a community is possible, public warning may be given by continuous sounding of sirens. If you hear these signals, tune in to your nearest radio station.

Radio and local TV broadcasts key stations to listen to are:

  • More FM (97.4FM)
  • Classic hits (89.4FM)
  • Radio Dunedin (1305AM)
  • Newstalk ZB (1044AM)
  • The Breeze (98.2FM)
  • Channel 9 TV

A strong earthquake felt near the coast should be treated as a tsunami warning move inland or to higher ground immediately.
