Apply for / renew a fire permit
If you are planning on having a fire, check with us first. Depending on where you are, there are permits and guidelines that you may need before you can start.
Applying for a new fire permit
Contact us and we will establish if your property is located in a fire district administered by the Dunedin City Council and whether it is urban or rural.
- New applicants for permits in the rural area will be transferred to Civil Defence & Rural Fires.
- Generally new applications will be processed within 4 working days of the request.
- We will let you know if your property is located in a Department of Conservation administered area as you will need to speak to them.
Renewing a fire permit
Contact us and and quote your previous permit number.
- You can apply for a renewal if all aspects of the permit are the same as the previously issued permit. Otherwise you will need to apply for a new permit.
- If a new or renewed permit is issued it will be sent by post (or by fax on request).
- Do not carry out burning until you have the permit and have signed the "Permit Holder" portion of the permit.
- You must be able to produce the permit on request to a Rural Fire Officer or a member of the Fire Service or Police.
