Fire districts

Dunedin's land area is administered by 3 fire authorites and depending on where you plan to light a fire, you will need the permission of the various authorities to do so.

We can look up the fire district map to see which fire authority your property falls under.

Areas of responsibilty

The New Zealand Fire Service administers areas that fall within the urban fire district and fires lit in these areas need to meet conditions in the Dunedin City Council Part 7 Fire Prevention Bylaw.

Dunedin City Council and Department of Conservation administer areas that fall with in the rural fire district and DOC buffer areas. To light a fire in these areas you will need to seek permission from these fire authorities.
