Who needs a fire permit
A fire permit must be obtained for any fire in the open at any time of the year in the rural part of Dunedin, as there is a 365-day restricted season in force.

Must meet the conditions of the Fire Prevention Bylaw. Refer to the guidelines on how to do this. Banned in prohibited fire season. |

Allowed in any area. Allowed during prohibited fire season. |
| Solid fuel BBQ |
No permit required in restricted season. Banned in prohibited season. |
| Hangi / Umu |
Permit required in rural areas. Bylaw applies in urban areas. Banned in prohibited fire season. |

Allowed in any area and during prohibited fire season. |

| Bonfires |
Bonfire permit required. Bonfires only permitted for New Years Eve, Guy Fawkes, or a significant community event. Must apply 2 weeks prior to event to allow for safety inspections. Cut off dates for bonfire applications are advertised in the Otago Daily Times. |

Permit required in rural areas. Bylaw applies in urban areas. Banned in prohibited fire season. |
