Fire seasons in Dunedin
Below is an explanation of both restricted and prohibited seasons and what the current fire season status is.
Prohibited season (TOTAL FIRE BAN)
- Is currently in force in all areas administered by the Dunedin City Council
- Is in force as of 6am on 9 March 2010 in the Strath Taieri, North Coast and South Coast zones shown in the fire ban map below

Prohibited season means
No fire may be lit in the open air during the Prohibited Fire Season except gas cookers and heaters.
Restricted Season (FIRE BY PERMIT ONLY)
- Is not currently in force in any areas administered by the Dunedin City Council.
Restricted season means
No fire may be lit in the open air during the Restricted Fire Season without a permit.
