Reporting dangerous fires

To report a dangerous or out-of-control fire call 111 and ask for the Fire Service.

Reporting potential fire hazards

Unsightly sections do not necessarily constitute a fire hazard and abatement notices will only be issued where it is determined there is a clear risk to life and property.

If possible you should approach the property occupants in the first instance. If the property occupants do not fix the problem and you wish to make a formal complaint contact us.

Details of the person reporting a potential fire hazard will be kept confidential.

Inspections will generally be carried out within 4 working days of the request and the complainant will be notified of the outcome if desired.

Reporting smoke nuisance

The Otago Regional Council (opens in a new window) is responsible for air quality in the Otago Region. If you are concerned about fires causing excessive smoke or pollution, phone the Pollution Hotline 0800 800 033.
