What to do following an emergency
Remember your personal safety - think before you act
- Keep calm and reassure others.
- Turn off gas, electricity and water.
- Check on your family.
- Listen to your radio for information and instructions.
- Wear sensible clothing for the conditions (especially footwear) if going out.
- Check on your neighbours.
- Check and secure pets.
Things that can slow emergency response
- Avoid using the telephone except where life is at risk - this means lines won't become overloaded and emergency services can take calls from people in need.
- Don't go sightseeing - you will put yourself at risk of injury or get in the way of emergency services.
