What to do following an emergency

Remember your personal safety - think before you act

  • Keep calm and reassure others.
  • Turn off gas, electricity and water.
  • Check on your family.
  • Listen to your radio for information and instructions.
  • Wear sensible clothing for the conditions (especially footwear) if going out.
  • Check on your neighbours.
  • Check and secure pets.

Things that can slow emergency response

  • Avoid using the telephone except where life is at risk - this means lines won't become overloaded and emergency services can take calls from people in need.
  • Don't go sightseeing - you will put yourself at risk of injury or get in the way of emergency services.
