Tahuna upgrade
The Tahuna Waste Water Treatment Plant Upgrade is a two-part project that will ensure Dunedin's wastewater is as pure as possible. Raw wastewater begins as 99% water, before primary treatment removes 60% of contaminants and secondary treatment 95%. The process has come a long way since the Lawyer's Head wastewater outlet was commissioned in 1908.
Dunedin's coastline & our responsibility
The Dunedin coastline is a high energy one. The Southland Current combines sub Antarctic and subtropical water and flows north up the Otago Coast from Foveaux Strait, before splitting and swinging out towards the Chatham Islands.
The Dunedin City Council monitors 60 km of this coastline, from Akatore to the south and as far north as Victory Beach. Although Akatore is outside the DCC boundary, it is important the control points are sited in areas of coastline least affected by human activities.
