Tahuna Plant upgrade - Stage 2

The desired outcome has been set for this project - a secondary wastewater treatment plant discharging practically clear, disinfected water similar to that at the Green Island Secondary Treatment Plant - but the method of getting there has not been fully decided. As technology changes or becomes more affordable, the best way to reach the desired outcome will also change.

The secondary treatment plant is likely to include UV radiation of the water to be discharged to sea. The UV frequency of 254 nanometres alters the DNA of microbiological organisms so they can’t multiply, effectively killing them.

This stage of the upgrade is scheduled for completion in 2011.
