Redevelopment plans for the Town Hall complex have been given the final go-ahead, with the Council approving a $45.4m development option in early November 2008.

Key features of the approved plan are:

• Transforming the Glenroy Auditorium into a multi-use space suitable for orchestral music, conferences and other uses.
• Extending the Glenroy foyer into the ground floor of the Municipal Chambers building. This space will double as a discrete conference/function space.
• Converting the first floor of the Chambers into two new conference/function spaces.
• Building a new entry to the Town Hall on Moray Place, which will provide front entrance disabled access.
• Building a new wind lobby entrance to the Glenroy Auditorium on Harrop Street.
• Improving the technical infrastructure within the building and room acoustics for function spaces.
• Building new kitchen facilities.
• Improving the ventilation systems in both the Town Hall and the Glenroy Auditorium.

Work will now get started

The Council's decision marks the end of a long process of testing the options for the redevelopment. More detailed design plan have now been completed. However, because of the size and complexity of the project, final design work and construction documentation is unlikely to be complete until late 2009 and construction work will start as soon as practicable after that.  

The first stage of construction will be the alterations to the Municipal Chambers building, starting around March next year. The Glenroy Auditorium will be closed throughout the project and the Town Hall will be closed from late May 2010 for around 12 months. It is anticipated the project will be completed by late 2011.
