FAQs - Dunedin Botanic Garden
This is a list of commonly asked questions about the facilities and services at the Dunedin Botanic Garden. If you don't find an answer to your question here, then contact us.
Can I walk my dog?
No, unless it is a guide or hearing dog. However, you can walk your dog in some areas of the nearby Woodhaugh Gardens.
Where can I ride my bike, skateboard or rollerblades?
There are currently no areas where riding your bike or skateboard or rollerblading are allowed in the Garden.
Can I feed the ducks?
Yes! Free duck food is available from the Information Centre between 10am and 4pm. Please feed the ducks only at the paved end of the duck pond as it contains the mess. To discourage seagulls, please only feed the ducks with grain.
Can I have a bbq?
No, but public barbeques are available at Woodhaugh Gardens and at Bethunes Gully.
Can we get married?
Yes! We would love to help you with your special day. Please contact us to discuss your plans and we can check if the site you would like is free. All bookings will be confirmed by email or post.
Popular sites include:

Where can I have a picnic?
There are many beautiful spots that are ideal for picnics. If you can't find just the right location, ask a staff member to point out their favourite place.
If you are planning a large event, contact us and we can book a space for you. The public will still be able to use it but you won't be tripping over another large group.
How do I find out what my plant is?
If the plant is from outside the Garden, bring us a good-sized cutting, preferably with flowers or berries attached, and we will be able to identify it or diagnose its problem.
Bring your cutting to the Information Centre between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday and we will get back to you within a few days.
Where can I raise a marquee or tent?
Nowhere - they are not allowed anywhere in the Garden except for Garden promotional events.
Can I hold an event?
You may be able to hold your event at the Botanic Garden but you must follow the approval process. For more information, contact Barbara Wheeler.
May I put a banner or a sign on the fence?
No, sorry. We do not allow advertising or any other signage on our fences. This includes not-for-profit events.
Can I buy seeds or plants?
No, sorry. We grow and cultivate plants only for use in the Garden.
Where do I buy the green fencing around the duckpond?
There are several metal workers in Dunedin. Check in the Yellow Pages under:- Metalwork - Non-ferrous
