Features of the Chinese Garden

This page contains some information about the various features of the Chinese Garden. We will add to it for your interest.

Why is the lake water so dark?

The lake is green rather than clear as it needs to be a 'Jade' colour to meet the authentic design requirements. This creates a reflective quality and also hides the fish in the lake, unless they are near the surface. This protects the fish from birds and gives a feeling of mystery to the water element of the garden.

By not seeing the bottom of the lake, you can only imagine its depth. The Garden is all about such effects on the visitor's eye and thoughts.

It is surprisingly difficult to maintain the water at this colour as it requires constant testing of pH levels and algal growth to keep it healthy.

What about the main entrance hall?

The river running in front of the main door is the boundary between the inside and outside worlds. The partition inside the main door demonstrates the deferential nature of Chinese culture and quickens the curiosity of visitors.
