Mountain biking code for considerate riding
There are some basic rules of behaviour that will ensure everyone, including wildlife and landowners, can enjoy these tracks:
Give way to other types of track users - regardless of circumstances. Please respect high use areas where conflict with other users is likely to occur.
Pass with care - make your presence known well in advance if approaching from behind.
Maintain control of your speed at all times. Downhill riders give way to uphill riders
Stay on tracks designated for bicycles - do not take any short cuts. Use gates or stiles and leave gates as you find them.
Respect the environment. Keep off native vegetation and sensitive environments, especially sand dunes, alpine and wetland communities. Consider your impact on all surfaces - avoid skidding your tyres.
Do not disturb wildlife or stock. Give animals a chance to move out of your way.
Respect our cultural heritage. Keep off known places of cultural significance such as pa and urupa sites.
Observe the New Zealand Environmental Care Code - minimise your impact on the environment. Carry out what you carry in.
Let someone know where you are going and when you will return. Ride in groups, and take fluids and food.
Think safety - always wear a helmet and high visibility clothing. Don't hit the track without one.
