Other tracks

Information about tracks at Heyward Point, Waitati Valley, Pigeon Flat, Kaetai Road and Halfway Bush including route descriptions and directions.

Heyward Point

Head from Sawyers Bay on Borlases Road, along Stevenson Ave and Brick Hill Road, through Sawyers Bay and up Upper Junction Road. At the top, turn right on to Mt Cargill Road, and ride along admiring the views. Not far beyond a hairpin corner and an old horse trough, turn right on Green Road (gravel). Connect with Blueskin Road, and turn left onto Heyward Point Road.

After 1.5km, the road turns to gravel, which ends after a further 4.6km at a farm gate and DOC sign. The 4WD track turns to an unformed single track through nettle and grass. The DOC track branches off to the right at the top of the cliffs. Walk your bike down the DOC track to Aramoana. Please take care as the grass can be slippery when its wet. A right turn onto Aramoana Road takes you back to Port Chalmers. Great views are to be had from Heyward Point and there is a nice tiki tour option around Aramoana and out to the Mole.

Karetai, Buskin And Paradise Roads

This is a mixture of sealed roads and "paper road" tracks on the Otago Peninsula. A section of Karetai Road is accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles, mountain bikers and walkers. Buskin and Paradise Roads run off Highcliff Road. Ride down one and up the other to make a good round trip.

Waitati Valley Track

Travel along George St, turning right onto Melvern St then veering right onto Leith Valley Road. Continue uphill on the gravel to cross the Northern motorway at Leith Saddle. Ride down the twisty Waitati Valley Road, watching for cars, and cross the motorway again onto Donald's Hill Road. Turn left at the intersection and ride up a short steep hill onto Mt Cargill Road, and then up another hill for a scenic ride over to North East Valley.

Pigeon Flat/O'Connell Road - Telecom Track

From Pine Hill Road turn right into Cowan Road. Twenty metres after the tarseal turns to gravel, turn left into a private drive. Please respect their privacy.

Follow this drive around to the left until you see the sign indicating the start of the track. Follow the rough track, which has superb views, until you get to O'Connell Road. Please do not deviate off the formed track. Stay on a gradual right curve, going around the side of Mt Cargill.

At the end of the track, turn left onto O'Connell Road, left again onto Pigeon Flat Road and then at the Leith Saddle, follow the gravel Leith Valley Road until you are at Woodhaugh Gardens and back in the city.

Halfway Bush And Abbot's Hill Roads

Sections of these roads are unsealed and, when coupled with other roads and tracks make an interesting part of a circuitous ride. Turn right off North Taieri Road onto Abbott's Hill Road. The unsealed section connects to Mount Grant Road, and Halfway Bush Road is off Three Mile Hill Road.
