New sand for Broad Bay beach

The beach at Broad Bay is about to be enlarged following a request by the Otago Peninsula Community Board. The narrow strip of sand has eroded over time due to normal sand movements caused by weather and tidal conditions.

The DCC has a resource consent from the Otago Regional Council for beach modifications at both Macandrew Bay and Broad Bay and have engaged Peninsula Contracting to undertake this minor project.

About 30 cubic metres of sand will be trucked from Blackhead sand quarry as the grain size of the sediment in the two areas matches. Coastal Parks Officer Renee Gordon comments that the coarser medium grain size of the sand slows down the rate of loss ensuring that the sand stays on the beach for longer. She says this is likely to become a 2-5 yearly maintenance issue dependent on environmental factors.

The work will take about half a day between 2 and 6 March. The contractor does not expect there to be any disruption to traffic in the area. The approximately $1,500 cost of the project has been covered by the Otago Peninsula Community Board.
