Dunedin welcomes 2009 in style

The good weather - it was a balmy 20 degrees - had everyone in tee-shirts enjoying the relaxed atmosphere  as a large crowd of all ages gathered in the Octagon to welome in 2009. Over 15,000 people knew that the Octagon was the place to celebrate the start of 2009.  Dunedin's legendary band the Oxo Cubans set the scene for an evening of great music, belting out the classics from their repertoire to the appreciative audience.

Following the countdown to 2009 and chimes from the Municipal Chambers clock, a spectacular fireworks display had the large crowd gasping.

Then it was back to the stage for more dancing with the Oxos.  Dunedin City Council Marketing and Communications Agency manager Debra Simes said "The Octagon is simply the best place to celebrate New Year's Eve. It's right in the centre of town.  Revellers can enjoy a meal in any of Dunedin's restaurants or cafes and then come  to the Octagon.  While Octagon itself is alcohol free, it is surrounded by bars and licensed premises so those who prefer a drink are well catered for. Families with children can be certain that they are in a safe and friendly environment where they will be entertained by some of Dunedin's finest musicians."
