Thieves Alley Street Market

The colourful carnival atmosphere in the heart of the city brings sellers from all points of the compass, from Auckland to Bluff attracted by this major street market and the influx of cruise ship visitors.

i-Site Dunedin Visitor Centre Manager, Louise van de Vlierd says that Thieves Alley and Market Day is likely to attract a large number of passengers from the Diamond Princess. Louise confirms that i-Site staff located at Port Chalmers will encourage passengers to disembark and come into the central city to experience this popular and lively market. Cruise ship passengers are always looking for something different and Thieves Alley and Market Day with craft and other stalls and local entertainment will definitely appeal.

Over 200 stallholders will market their wares of wood, metal, stone, gem, and glass. Unique clothing and craft will be snapped up along with a plethora of produce. The variety of food is guaranteed to tantalise taste buds.

Thieves Alley is more than just a street market. Runners race the Town Hall clock chimes around the Octagon giving an exhilarating start to this time-honoured event, celebrating its 25th year.

With singing and dancing in the street it's a real family day - dancers in fabulous costumes twirling in different styles of dance up George Street.

In Princes Street, an international stage, featuring a multitude of cultures. The Otago Museum will be presenting their "Out and About Science" and dare you to abseil the giant climbing tower. Stuart Street stirs with magic from the UK, African Drums and the sound of South America.

Pursuits for children are on the upper Octagon with all the  favourites - bouncing castles, merry-go-round and Clifford the big red dog.

Plan on staying the day to fully experience the diverse attractions designed to entice and entertain everyone.
