Events Strategy Released
The draft Festivals and Events Strategy lays out clear guidelines for the city's decision makers, allocating funding for festivals and events by sorting them into three categories - Premier, Major and Local.
Kate Styles, GM Strategy and Development, sees the new strategy as a positive direction for the city. "We made a conscious decision to focus on the events we already have here, to strengthen the bond between those events and the city."
Cllr Bezett, Chair of the Economic Development Committee, explained, "It's not about trying to pick winners but it will make sure people applying for money are more accountable. It also means that those who miss out will know why and what to do before reapplying."
The draft strategy was well received by events organisers in the city with Nicholas McBryde, Director, Otago Festival of the Arts, saying, "The initiative of formalising this strategy is great. The process over the last two years, while slow and frustrating, has been robust. I congratulate City Hall for sticking with it."
