Food Outlets Keen On New Food Safety Plan

Ten food premises in Dunedin have completed the new Food Control Plans and many more have begun the process.

The Food Control Plan provides an operator with procedures to manage food handling - from the buying and storing to the cooking and serving.  The emphasis is on staff training and hygiene and includes sickness policies.

"Dunedin businesses have put a lot of work into achieving the certification and we want to applaud them for their diligence and encourage other food premises to do the same," Dunedin City Council Environment Health Team Leader, Ros MacGill, said.  "It's great to see  businesses committed to providing the safest food possible for their customers."

Adopting the Food Safety Plan is voluntary but it is expected this will change when the Food Bill is passed by Government.

Although separate to the current A to D food grading system, implementing the new plan would greatly assist a business achieving an A grade claims DCC's Senior Environmental Health Officer, Wayne Boss.

"The Food Safety Plan gives businesses systems they can use throughout the year while the food grading is a snapshot of the business at inspection time," Mr Boss said.

"The strength of the new system is it records diligence in food preparation and it gives operators documented records on their own food safety."

He said food premises had told him it had been a daunting process to begin with but in the long run it had helped immeasurably.

Businesses which complete the Food Safety Plan receive a certificate which they can display where the public can see it.

The first 10 food premises in the Dunedin City area, all of which have achieved an audited Food Control Plan during the last few months, are listed below.  They have indicated they are happy to talk to the media about their experiences gaining the certification.
