Safety Behind New Online Service For City Road Users
From 1.00pm today, the Dunedin City Council website will provide up to the minute information about road conditions and closures on its home page - www.dunedin.govt.nz/road-conditions .
The new service will initially provide situation reports about winter road conditions and official road closures. The information will be provided by the DCC's authorised contractors and Police, and will be updated both during and after normal daily working hours. The site will become the central collection point for all road agencies to add official statements on roading conditions in the Dunedin area.
The road conditions information on the DCC website will update in real time, ensuring the user has up to the minute information without having to refresh the page 24 hours a day.
There is also a link to a map showing the DCC's schedule of roads which are routinely gritted or treated with CMA.
If successful there is the potential for year-round road condition updates and the service could also provide an addition to the information provided for the public in the event of Civil Defence emergencies.
Mayor Peter Chin, said, "It remains to be seen how helpful this information will prove for city road users but it does provide another tool allowing them to make informed decisions about how to travel safely to and from the city. I'm delighted, but not surprised, that our web staff and roading engineers have been able to respond so quickly."
The service which has been on the Council's 'must do' list for a couple of years, was built over a two-week period following discussions between the Dunedin City Council and the Chamber of Commerce about improving access to information for road-users about city roads.
The DCC Customer Service Agencies expect the service to be helpful, as it will ensure they have immediate access to accurate information.
The road conditions page can be found at www.dunedin.govt.nz/road-conditions.
