Street Tree Planting 2009

This year's street tree planting project will include the planting of 30 Gum trees on Portsmouth Drive.  The trees will be planted on either side of the road and also in the central median strip. The trees will be the same species as the gums at the eastern end of Portsmouth Drive near the Portobello Road intersection. They will be well suited to the windy and salty conditions on Portsmouth Drive.

A section of Hillside Road, outside the Hillside Engineering workshops, has also been identified for street tree planting.  The trees will be placed in suitable locations to avoid visibility issues for traffic and will be planted in new pits which will be installed in the footpath.

George Street and Princes Street have both had a few trees removed over the last couple of years due to vandalism and disease.  This year those empty plots will have replacement trees planted.

There will also be replacement trees for some streets in Mosgiel where the street shrubs have been removed.  The shrubs were seen to be a hazard for traffic due to their density at ground level. The shrubs will be replaced with clear stemmed trees which will provide better visibility for traffic pulling out of driveways etc.
