Curling puts Dunedin on the map
The success of the 2009 Senior World Curling Championships held recently in Dunedin has brought a little bit of the city to living rooms around the world. Television footage, shot not only by local television Channel 9, but also by other broadcasters, has been made available free of charge to media outlets in the team's home towns.
"All the competitors were from small places, just like Dunedin, so to have this on their local television is quite something for them," championship event manager Alan O'Connor said.
Twenty teams from 12 countries competed at the Dunedin Ice Stadium and similar event organisers were now looking at coming to the city following its success, Mr O'Connor said.
"We've proved it's not a risk anymore."
Dunedin City Council's general manager Community Life Graeme Hall said it illustrated the reason for council's support of the building of the mezzanine viewing floor at the stadium.
"The hard work by curling in managing this world event leads the way for other significant ice events to be held in this superb facility," Mr Hall said.
