Mayor's Mid winter Breakfast
From 7am before even the birds wake up on Friday 19 June, Dunedin's Mayor and Councillors will be in the heart of Dunedin providing a warm start to the day as part of the annual fundraising drive for Dunedin's food banks.
City Councillors will literally "serve their public" as part of the fundraiser with all food and services donated by local businesses for the occasion. Reviewing the quantities of food involved is impressive. The menu includes 300 eggs, 20kg of rolled oats, 20kg of sausages, 6kg of spaghetti, 6kg baked beans, toast and 20kg of Havoc bacon to be consumed on the day.
Proceeds raised will go to Dunedin's foodbanks at a time when some residents find winter brings rising power bills and increasing financial hardship.
Dunedin's public can enjoy plates brimming with hot hearty servings for only $5 each. Plates of steaming hot porridge and fruit or bannocks with warm drizzling of golden syrup will also be available for just $3.
Dunedin City Council Events Manager Marilyn Anderson says "Where else in New Zealand can locals at the crack of dawn, in the middle of winter get together early for such a mighty breakfast - and all for such a good cause"
Surprisingly Dunedin is not the southernmost community to celebrate Mid-winter with a few hardy souls at Antarctica planning to celebrate as well.
At 7.40am during the Mayor's Mid-winter Breakfast a live report from Scott Base will be broadcast comparing Dunedin's weather with the "deep south".
Scott Base staff will also outline their plans for a series of mid winter dinners with their neighbours understood to be accompanied by a traditional nude polar plunge in -20 degree C water.
