Dunedin Trees Protected by District Plan

Final approval has been given to change the Resource Management Act from 1 October 2010. The issue of trees received the most debate in Parliament. How trees should be protected was largely driven by the situation in Auckland. There is little impact on Dunedin because significant trees are already managed in a way that already closely matches the changes to the law.

The law change will require that all trees needing to be protected from removal, trimming and pruning must be identified in a District Plan. The DCC has used this approach since 2000.

Dunedin residents wanting to find out if they have a tree identified in the District Plan can contact the Council's Planning department, or go on line to www.dunedin.govt.nz and look for the District Plan, Volume 2.

Anyone whose property is within the Dunedin district and who has a scheduled tree requires a resource consent to trim, prune, work within the drip line, or remove the tree.

There is no fee for these applications. There is also currently Council funding to assist with the maintenance of scheduled trees.
