Trains coming to town
The vintage trains that will be travelling to and from Middlemarch during the Otago Central Vulcan and Steam Celebrations this Labour Weekend start arriving in Dunedin in early October.
The Diesel locomotive Dg772 and the Vulcan railcar will depart from Christchurch at 7.50am on Saturday, 10 October, arriving in Dunedin at 5.55pm. There will be a trip up the gorge planned before the Labour Weekend festival, with all the former drivers and guards invited to take a trip down memory lane.
The Vulcan railcar is getting a fresh coat of paint at Ferrymead Railway in Christchurch where three of the nine Vulcans used in the South Island during the 1950s-70s are stored. It is being repainted in its original livery of red and white.
The Mainline Steam excursion, hauled by steam locomotives Jb1236 and Ab663, arrives in Dunedin from Christchurch at 4.20pm on Friday 23 October.
For photo opportunities, please contact either Grant Craig regarding the Taieri Gorge trip or Nigel Hogg to inspect the Vulcan at Ferrymead Railway. A photo of the unrestored Vulcan is also available from Kim Newman.
