Areas where dogs are prohibited
There are areas in the city where it is prohibited to take your dogs. This page details these areas.
Areas where dogs are not allowed
Dogs are not allowed in any children's playgrounds, cemeteries or on designated playing areas of sports grounds anywhere in the city.
Exceptions
These prohibitions do not apply to:
- Guide dogs for the blind
- Hearing aid dogs
- Companion dogs
- Police dogs
- Dogs being used by security guards
- Working dogs
- Confined dogs
- Dogs securely confined in or on a vehicle
You are allowed to walk your dog through a prohibited area to an exercise area if it is securely controlled with a leash or chain.
Areas where dogs are not allowed at any time.
Commercial Areas
Dogs are not permitted at any time in these commercial areas;
- The Octagon,
- Civic Centre Library Plaza
- Princes Street from the Exchange to Knox Church on George Street.
- King Edward Street, South Dunedin between Hillside and Macandrew Roads
Beach Areas
Dogs are not permitted on the following beaches around the city
- Designated areas of bathing beaches (other than St Clair Beach and Brighton Beach) between the lifeguards flags.
- St Clair Beach and Esplanade area including
- the entire beach from the Salt Water Pool to the nearest piles on the beach to the north.
- the park on Victoria Road adjoining the playground area, the playground area itself
- the sealed area from the Esplanade to the beach track.
- the Esplanade area, which runs parallel to the sea wall as far as the Salt Water Pool
- the Esplanade car park.
- the reserve between the Esplanade car park and Bedford Street.
