City Safety
The DCC has a role in ensuring our residents can live, work and play safely in our city.
We have formulated a City Safety Programme in partnership with various groups in the community, including the Police, and the Crime Prevention Unit of the Ministry of Justice. We also actively involve other organisations that may be affected. All of these groups have a vested interest in making Dunedin a city that is safe and welcoming to both residents and visitors.
If you would like to be involved, or have some ideas of your own, please contact our Customer Advocate, Adrian Blair on 477 4000.
Dunedin's City Safety Programme
The Dunedin City Safety Programme is a collaborative initiative between the DCC and Dunedin Police, in partnership with the Crime Prevention Unit of the Ministry of Justice.
The programme is overseen by the City Safety Leaders Forum and aims to increase the level and perception of safety in the central city. A number of strategies have been introduced to achieve this goal including:
- A central city liquor ban
- City safety officers
- Improved street lighting
- Safety audits and other crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) measures
- Community partnerships with key stakeholders
The city safety programme has become more focused over the 2007/08 year, with emphasis on the Safety Officers, and CPTED safety assessments and related initiatives in the central city.
City Safety Leaders Forum
In September 2002, the City Safety Leaders Forum was established to ensure our City Safety Plan is governed and managed effectively. The forum includes the:
- Police District Commander
- Dunedin Area Controller
- Mayor
- Chief Executive of the DCC
- Crime Prevention Unit of the Ministry of Justice
Representatives from other stakeholder organisations are also involved from time to time when issues relevant to them are being addressed.
The Leaders Forum meets four times a year to oversee the City Safety Plan and initiatives.
