City Safety Officers
Dunedin's city safety officers have been working in and around the city since the summer of 2004/05 after a trial over that period showed the officers were a valuable addition to safety in the central city area.
Since 2004, the city safety officers have had over 35,000 interactions with members of the public.
The safety officers act as eyes and ears for both the Police and the DCC. They will help police officers if they need it and they advise us of anything that needs our attention.
When are the safety officers around?
The safety officers work from September through to April/May. Dunedin's winters being chilly there is less need for them to be around during the colder months.
During busy periods such as school holidays and when there are major events happening, the patrols may be extended.
The usual patrols are:
- Friday night from 3pm on Friday afternoon until 5 or 6am on Saturday
- Saturday nights from 9pm through to 5 or 6am
During Orientation Week and at the end of term, there are usually safety officer patrols in North Dunedin as well.
How can they help?
Dunedin's city safety officers are ambassadors for our city, providing a non-threatening and reassuring sense of security in the central city area when it's busy.
If you are in town, you can approach any safety officer for help or information. If you are feeling unsafe, an officer will walk you to your car or wait with you until a taxi or bus arrives.
You can contact the safety officers on 0275 723 389.
