Keep Dunedin Beautiful
The Keep Dunedin Beautiful Committee is a group of volunteers committed to projects that encourage citizens to take pride in and care for their environment. Members include community groups, individuals, Councillors and Community Board members.
The committee began in 1967 as the Anti Litter Committee and in 1987 began using a programme from the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Society Inc. We run many high profile events in partnership with the Dunedin City Council and other community organisations.

Some of our events
We have a variety of projects aimed at various sectors of the community. We try to encourage residents to take pride in and care for their community environment. If you would like to be involved in any of these projects, please contact us to discuss your ideas.
Trees for Babies (Celebrating families)
Each autumn, in partnership with Rotary Dunedin, we organise tree plantings for babies and other family members in city reserves. 'Trees for Babies' is a long-term native tree-planting project where family members can celebrate the birth of a child or significant milestone. It also contributes to a native re-vegetation project in a city reserve.
Clean Ups
Clean Ups are held in many parts of the city to get rid of litter. We provide help to community groups who take part in clean ups each year. If your community group wants to do a clean up in Dunedin, we can provide rubbish bags and gloves free of charge and arrange for the rubbish to be collected.
Hanging Baskets
We apply for funding each year to hang planted hanging baskets in the CBD area. The baskets are planted and hung in December and hang until autumn. This project is aimed at beautifying the inner city for both residents and visitors to Dunedin.
Theatre Group
The theatre group performs a play each year in primary and intermediate schools in and around Dunedin. The play encourages young people to become more aware of their local environment and to think about how their actions affect it. The play promotes individual responsibility towards managing waste and stresses the need to 'rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle'.
We have a range of funding schemes available for both community groups and individuals within the Dunedin area.Awards Programme
The Keep Dunedin Beautiful Awards celebrates and honours the people of Dunedin who are committed to beautifying their city and caring for their environment through volunteer action. Each November, we invite schools, community groups and individuals to tell us about environmental projects they have worked on during the year and an awards ceremony is held in March the following year.
Nominations for the awards close in the last week of January. If you would like to nominate a group for these awards, please fill in this form.

Murals
We work with community groups/individuals and schools on various mural projects in public spaces. Contact us to discuss your suggestions.
Graffiti
We can help with concerns about graffiti if it is on public property. Unfortunately we cannot remove graffiti from private property. We will approach the owners and pass on concerns, but the removal of graffiti on private property is up to the owner of that property. Please do let us know about any areas that are often targeted.
