Community and Recreation Policies

There are a number of Council policies that govern the delivery of community and recreation services to the people of Dunedin. If you would like to discuss any of these policies with us, please give us a call.

Art in Public Places Policy

This policy sets guidelines for the role of art in public places of Dunedin.

This policy is about developing and promoting Dunedin's artistic and cultural communities. It also aims to preserve our cultural and heritage resources.

Community Policy (PDF, 95 kb, new window)

In 1992 we adopted our first "Community Policy". It was written in response to the reshaping of New Zealand's welfare policies in the 1980s. Its aim was to focus on the needs of Dunedin citizens within a wider context of government's welfare reforms.

The 1997 review of this Policy built on this policy, incorporating government policy changes and community trends as well as input from community and statutory agencies. This background information is contained in the appendices to the policy.

Disability Strategy (PDF, 96 kb, new window)

The Disability Strategy presents a long-term plan to make Dunedin a more inclusive city. It has been developed by a disability consultant in consultation with disabled people and the wider disability sector.

This document establishes broad funding policies which form the basis for criteria for grants and loans.

Housing Policy (PDF, 23.4 kb, new window)

Our main role with regard to the housing environment in Dunedin is seen to be regulatory enforcement of standards and provision of housing to those in the community whose needs are not being met. This policy is currently under review.

Older Person's Policy (PDF, 79.4 kb, new window)

This policy will guide our future actions and recommend an appropriate course of action to other organisations with regard to improving the quality of life for older people in our city.

Physical Activity Strategy (PDF, 3.5 mb, new window)

This is a strategy to raise awareness of Dunedin people to get physically active to sustain health both physically and mentally.

Play Strategy (PDF, 839 kb, new window)

This strategy ensures provision of services and safety standards as well as outlining a strategy for encouraging children to play.

Recreation - Indoor Facilities (PDF, 87.9 kb, new window)

This document is the result of research done in 1997 into Dunedin's indoor recreation facilities.

Track Policy (PDF, 142 kb, new window)

The Track Policy and Strategy is based on extensive investigation and research into track issues. The major priorities which emerge from this are: management, maintenance and information needs of existing tracks.

Young Persons Strategy (PDF, 418 kb, new window)

This policy sets out guidelines for the setting of priorities and development of annual action plans with regard to youth.
