Environmental Health
Part of the Dunedin City Council's regulatory role is to promote, protect and improve the health of the city's residents. There is a variety of legislation that obliges us to do this:
- Health Act 1956
- Food Act 1981
- Resource Management Act 1991
- Sale of Liquor Act 1989
- Local Government Act 1974
How we promote, protect and improve health
To ensure you can feel confident about the safety of your health and are not troubled by nuisances, we:
- Register and inspect businesses such as food premises and hairdressing salons.
- Investigate, resolve and monitor nuisances or health hazards.
- Investigate infectious diseases notified by the Medical Officer of Health, food poisonings, and food-borne illnesses.
- Monitor and enforce all relevant bylaws.
- Review resource and building consents for compliance with environmental health standards in both domestic and commercial situations.
- We are here to provide advice and information to you about your rights, obligations and responsibilities under the relevant legislation and on general public health matters.
