Busking in Dunedin

You must have a permit to busk in Dunedin. There is no charge, but there are some conditions. Permits are posted within two working days and are valid for one year from the date of issue.

Permit conditions

  • You cannot busk in one area for more than an hour unless you have permission from the surrounding businesses. If your instruments are very loud such as bagpipes or drums, you must get permission from surrounding premises. This is not a license to create excessive noise.
  • You can only busk between 9am and 10pm Monday to Sunday all year. If we receive a justified noise or obstruction complaint about your busking, you will be asked to move on. If you do not when asked, your instruments may be seized under the Resource Management Act.
  • If you do not follow these conditions, your permit may be cancelled. Busking in the city malls is only permitted if you have the mall manager's permission.
  • If you are under 14, you must have your parent or caregivers consent. We may require proof of age.
  • You may not use amplifiers.
  • The maximum number in any one group is four unless you have a specific exemption.
