Food Control Plans
Food laws are soon to be updated by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) to help food operators take responsibility for producing safe food. In response to these changes, we are giving all food businesses the opportunity to be involved with the new processes early, on a voluntary basis.
The NZFSA have produced a Food Control Plan that is designed to show food operators how to produce safe food and comply with legislation by controlling the risk areas in preparing and selling food. We are holding free workshops, in conjunction with the Otago Polytechnic to help food businesses get their plans started.
At the moment, we inspect food businesses yearly to ensure they comply with the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974. Under the new Act, food businesses with a Food Control Plan in place will be exempt from these regulations, providing they can show us that records, management and business activities are following the plan.
