Rates rebate information
If you are on a benefit, or under financial hardship, a quarterly rates bill may be one bill on top of many. But this is one bill that we or even the government can help you with. Depending upon your circumstances, you may qualify for a Rates Rebate.
If you meet some of the criteria below, contact us to discuss the schemes in depth to see if you qualify.
Am I eligible?
The rebate scheme is based on low income and the level of rates you pay.
If this is you:
-
Your gross income for the period of 1/04/2008 to 31/03/2009 was low and
- You pay the rates on the address that you live at, and
- You were living there as at 1 July 2009, and
- Your name is on the rates bill (or if not, and you have a legal ownership interest in the property and you are required to pay the rates, a copy of the legal document or confirmation letter from a solicitor is required.)
You may be eligible if:
- You are single, living alone and your gross income for the period of 1/04/2008 to 31/03/2009 was low and
- Your total gross household income (including spouse) is less than $21,910
- Your total household gross income exceeds $21,910, depending on the number of dependants and the amount of your rates
- You are a couple whose only income is New Zealand Superannuation, and your annual rates are more than $1,000 and you have no dependants
You can also apply if you:
- Have a trust and your name is on the rate account. You do not need to supply a letter from a trustee or solicitor. If your name is not on the rate account you will need to provide a Legal Agreement of Life Interest from a solicitor.
- Are not on the rate account of a property in an estate and are the surviving partner. You must provide a Legal Agreement of Life Interest from a solicitor.
- Live in a retirement village and your name is on the rate account.
