Blue recycling bins

This page contains useful information about the blue bin recycling service.

About blue recycling bins

Blue bins belong to the property and should have the address written on it. Each household can have up to three blue bins. The recycling service costs form part of your rates.

Your blue bin will be emptied on the same day as your rubbish bags are collected, between 8am and 4.30pm. Please make sure your blue bin is out by 8am and not before 7pm the night before..

What can be recycled in your blue bin?

We only have access to limited markets for recyclable materials. This means we can only accept certain types of materials. We, and our contractors, are always seeking new markets and we look forward to being able to expand our collection.

Put the following in your blue bin:

  • Aluminium cans - washed and squashed
  • Steel cans, glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic Bottles #1 and #2 - wash, squash, lids removed
  • Cardboard/plastic milk cartons - washed and squashed

Put the following by your blue bin:

Cardboard - flatten it and tie it securely with string or tape. Keep it smaller than 80 x 70cm as it won't fit through the slot on the truck if it's any bigger.

Paper - put it into a plastic bag and tie the handles. This means that when it is thrown up into the truck, it won't fly everywhere. You can recycle any kind of paper, unless it is waxed or has food on it, including:

  • Plain or coloured paper
  • Exercise book paper
  • Lecture notes
  • Windowless envelopes
  • Receipts
  • Paper bags
  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Junk mail
  • Telephone books with covers removed

Blue bin handles

You can get a metal handle for 45 litre blue bins, to make it easier to carry. The handles:

  • Are metal and span the length of the bin like a shopping basket handle
  • Cost $7.00
  • Are available to mobility impaired people at no charge from the Customer Services Agency in the Civic Centre.

Replacement and extra blue bins

Each household can have up to three blue bins. They cost $12 (45 ltr) and $13 (70ltr) and are available from all our Customer Services Agencies.

If your bin is lost, or broken, contact the property owner to replace it or come in and buy one from one of our Customer Services Agencies.

Big blue bins

We have 70 litre bins available for households of five or more. If you think you have a good reason as to why you need a big blue bin, write to us. Write to:

  • Waste Services, PO Box 5045, Dunedin

A new blue bin for your new house

If you have just built a house, contact us and we can supply you with a blue bin to go with it. We will need to check that you live on a collection route.
