Rubbish bags
This page contains all the information you need to know about DCC rubbish bags.
Where you can get DCC rubbish bags
DCC rubbish bags can be bought at Customer Service Agencies, Otago Polytechnic and Otago University Students Associations, supermarkets and some dairies and petrol stations.
How much do they cost?
We sell the rubbish bags for:
- 40 litre rubbish bags cost $1.50
- 65 litre rubbish bags cost $1.90
Other retailers may have different prices.
What can't you put in your DCC rubbish bags?
We only collect general household waste. This is partly to keep our rubbish collectors safe and also part of our ongoing effort to reduce waste going to landfill.
We won't collect your rubbish if it contains:
- Green waste & soil
- Unwrapped broken glass or sharp objects
- Hot ashes
- Medical waste
- Liquids
- Paint
- Hazardous waste
Can you fill your DCC rubbish bag to capacity?
DCC rubbish bags are designed to hold up to 20 kg of weight. Anything more than this becomes a health and safety issue for our contractors and they won't take them away.
Why do we not use biodegradable bags?
The choice of materials was carefully considered, as the bags have to meet the New Zealand standard for containment of domestic rubbish.
We worked out that paper rubbish bags are about nine times the volume of the equivalent plastic ones. This means we would send an estimated 706 tonnes of paper bags to landfill, as opposed to 34 tonnes of plastic bags.
Paper bags were also a lot more expensive for us to buy. This is a cost that would be passed onto the user (you).
When we advertised for manufacturers and suppliers of rubbish bags, no company submitted a tender based on biodegradable bags. This meant we were unable to look at them as an option.
