Road closures

If you are having an event requiring some or all of a road to be closed temporarily, contact us to discuss your needs. We will provide you with guidance to ensure you comply with and traffic management plan requirements.

General rules for applying for a road closure

You need to complete the required details on application forms including the name of your organisation, phone number, and the type of activity you are proposing.

Your application should be made at least 21 days prior to final date, to allow time to advertise road closure (this is a legal requirement). If your application involves temporary road closure of a state highway (even if only crossing state highway), 42 days is required prior to the final date. This is Transit New Zealand policy.

A $25 application fee applies for road closures and street activities.

Information you will need to supply with your application

These forms outline some conditions including, liability insurance, providing necessary marshals, barricades, informing the police, liability for advertising costs and rectifying problems arising from public advertising.

Partial road closure

If you are organising a fun run or protest march (this is known as a Street Activity) you will not need to have the whole road closed, and require the following forms:

If you want to have a market day or parade involving both lanes of the street, you will need to apply for a road closure on the following forms:

How much does it all cost?

There are costs involved relating to advertising the road closure for public notification. It is usually between $80 and $100 for the notification plus any additional costs associated with traffic management.

Decision-making process

When your application is received, we will make a decision based on safety issues, traffic management and conditions. We will let you know what our decision is by mail. This letter will include:

  • Some advice for the day
  • A repeat of the conditions that apply to your event
  • The dates the closure will be advertised
  • A reminder that you will be invoiced
