Active School Warning Signs

In April 2006, Land Transport New Zealand approved the trial of Active School Warning Signs to be extended to include twelve sites in Dunedin. Dunedin City Council wanted to address concerns about road safety issues around schools, opting to trial these Active Warning Signs, rather than use the 40 km/hr School Zone signs, because of the reduced cost and the potential for the signs to be more suitable for the road conditions around Dunedin schools, where congestion and restricted approach visibility were often issues.

The signs were installed in Dunedin in November and December 2006. As part of the trial, the impact of the Active Signs was measured using surveys between March and May 2007.

The DCC evaluation report was submitted to Land Transport New Zealand in October 2007, who made the decision to approve the use of these signs throughout New Zealand. As a result of the evaluation findings the 'School Patrol' signs were changed so that all were 'School Zone' signs.
