Waste minimisation & resource recovery
We adopted the Resource Recovery and Waste Minimisation Strategy in 2006. This provides the direction for waste minimisation to be achieved. Its vision statement is:
'Dunedin, a sustainable city in which 'waste' is transformed into a beneficial material or is returned benignly to nature'.
Dunedin needs to reduce the solid waste it sends to landfill to achieve our target of zero waste to landfill. We work closely with residents, schools, businesses and manufacturers to effect waste reduction.
How will we achieve zero waste?
We support and promote courses in sustainable practices - the Enviroschools programme in schools and Sustainable Living courses within the community. We also promote waste minimisation practices for individuals and households by speaking to schools, community groups and businesses and publishing various pamphlets.
The cloth nappy subsidy is a recent initiative to reduce waste to landfill, as is selling Bokashi Composting buckets at cost price from the Customer Services Agencies. The Nothrow Waste Exchange, supported by the DCC, aims to keep valuable resources, out of the waste stream, by enabling others to use them.
We also audit the refuse and recycle contracted services ito ensure the city is getting value for money, and keeping the city environs as tidy as possible.
