Storm and wastewater

There are two types of water that end up in our drains and gutters - storm water and wastewater.

Storm water is the natural runoff from land, gutters and roofs, such as rain. It disappears straight into the ground or down the drain to be discharged directly in to the Harbour, the ocean or the nearest water course. This is why it is important not to tip hazardous materials down the roadside drains.

Wastewater comes from your plumbing system. It goes through the foul sewers to the wastewater treatment plants before discharge to sea or a land irrigation system.

These pages outlines how these different types of water are handled within Dunedin City and looks to future plans for the ongoing management of waste and storm water.
