Wastewater treatment issues for the future
The technologies used for wastewater treatment are constantly changing. We try to keep our methods as up to date as possible. There are always issues we have to factor into our long term planning. Some of these are listed below.
- Systems need constant maintenance and the wastewater treatment system is no exception.
- It has been estimated that over $100m new capital will be spent over the next ten years for treatment and disposal upgrades associated with the Tahuna Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade. Significant increases in operating costs will occur as a result of the upgrade of Tahuna WWTP, scheduled to take place over the period 2004 to 2011.
- It has been estimated that $26.1m may be required over the next ten years for trunk mains and reticulation renewals. A re-evaluation of the strategy for condition profiling of trunk mains is required as the current methodology is insufficient. A new strategy must ensure that:
- Condition profiling is conducted using risk-based methodology
- It is at an appropriate industry standard and will comply with Audit requirements.
- To fully understand both the existing and future capacity of the reticulation, a hydraulic investigation or modelling of the trunk mains is needed. This modelling, along with the condition assessment, will enable a long-term replacement programme for trunk mains to be implemented.
- A high percentage of the condition of the pipe materials is still unknown. This issue will be resolved when the condition assessment for the trunk mains and reticulation is completed.
