Waikouaiti/Karitane wastewater treatment plant
Wastewater from Waikouaiti and Karitane is collected and piped through a series of pump stations to the Waikouaiti Oxidation Ponds. The wastewater passes through a comminution process before being discharged proportionally between the Waikouaiti and Karitane ponds.
The land disposal site is on a sandy foreshore covered by a 25-year-old pine plantation about 300 metres south of the oxidation ponds. Effluent is dispersed onto the land via an irrigation system.
