Wastewater treatment in Dunedin

Part of our role is to ensure the effectiveness and safety of Dunedin's water treatment system. This page will give you an overview of how and why we do that.

Why do we have a wastewater treatment system?

Our goals in providing a public wastewater system are to:

  • Ensure the health of the community where urban housing exists, eliminating the need for individuals to provide their own wastewater system (which carries much higher health risks)
  • Provide a cost-effective trade waste disposal system for commercial and industrial users. In some areas pre-treatment of the individual waste is required
  • Provide a high-quality, efficient and environmentally acceptable collection, treatment and disposal system that functions in a controlled and regulated manner
  • Provide services for present needs, while ensuring there is potential for sustainable growth at the desired levels of service

What do you want from the wastewater treatment system?

The main areas of concern for our customers (you) are that:

  • The wastewater system is reliable
  • Service is efficient and at a reasonable cost
  • Response to call outs is quick and efficient
  • The system is odour free
  • Effects to the environment are minimised

The key facts about our treatment plants

  • We own and manage eight separate wastewater treatment systems
  • The population served by each plant varies from 100 to 83,000
  • The majority of the publicly owned foul reticulation system works via gravity
  • Pipe size varies from 100 mm to 1650 mm in diameter
  • Overall there are 78 wastewater pump stations
