Mosgiel's water system

Mosgiel has a separate water supply system to Metropolitan Dunedin. This information describes the collection, treatment and distribution processes for the Mosgiel area.

Mosgiel's water demand is increasing. Previous studies projected that the peak short-term water use in Mosgiel will exceed 5,000 m³ per day, over a 35yr term. To address this issue, the Dunedin City Council lodged an application with the Otago Regional Council (ORC) in 2006 to provide for the projected demand from expanding infrastructure and population growth including the provision for an emergency water supply to the North Taieri Industrial Estate and North Taieri Rural Water Supply Scheme.

Generally water demand ranges from 2,500 m³/day in winter up to 5,700 m³/day in summer. The peak demand day in recent years has been recorded at 7,000 m³/day.
