Cruise ships - All you need to know
With facilities available at Port Chalmers to serve both industry and tourism, more and more cruise ships are including Dunedin on their itineraries.
Dunedin has many scheduled daily tours. There is a good number of tour operators that run tours that specifically cater for cruise ship passengers.
These tours include trips to the Otago Peninsula, Moeraki Beach, Brighton & Waihola, and the Beaumont Jet Boat ride as well as walks in the city to learn about the historic buildings and people, or walks to discover Dunedin's contemporary jewellery and fashion industry.
Contact us for more information on these suggested activities.
i-SITE container at the wharf
Staff from the local i-SITE Visitor Centre are available at the wharf to greet passengers. The onsite container shop is set up to provide all the services we have at the centre in town.
We can provide information about Dunedin, offer suggestions for your day in our city and make any bookings you may need. The container i-SITE also has a range of souvenirs, maps and postcards for sale.
We have updates of all the tours around the city each day to ensure we can give you an up-to-date accurate range of options for your outings.
Port Chalmers
Port Chalmers is the historic gateway to Otago, about 20 minutes drive from Dunedin city. It is now an arts and crafts village with an eclectic range of galleries, artisans' workshops, clothing and jewellery stores. There is also a fortnightly market that runs from Friday until Sunday.
A little further around the harbour, you will find beautiful beaches and some lovely - and varyingly strenuous - walks. We have brochures describing the walks and can offer advice on how to reach some of these areas.
The Port Chalmers district website (opens in a new window) offers further information about the area.
Transport into the city
Often your ship will have arranged transport into Dunedin city. There are also a range of shuttles and buses that depart from Port Chalmers. Their frequency can vary depending on demand.
You may also choose to take a taxi into town. This will cost you around $35 - $45.
If you have booked ahead for an organised tour, check with your organiser for departure points and times.
Cruise ship schedule
The schedule of arrival and departure times for all cruise ships coming into Port Chalmers is updated daily on the Port Otago website (opens in a new window).
When you are arranging your schedule, please allow sufficient time for disembarking processes before going ashore. If in doubt, please check with the purser's office.
