Bylaws for Dunedin City

The bylaws are created in response to needs and concerns of our city, and as such, evolve and change over time. This page lists the current Dunedin City bylaws.

Amusement Devices Bylaw (PDF, 72.3 kb, new window)
This bylaw details the restricitions and requirements that apply to the operation of amusement devices in the City.

Beauticians, Tattooists and Skin Piercers Bylaw (PDF, 91.6 kb, new window)
The purpose of this bylaw is to prevent the transference of communicable diseases such as Hepatitis B and C, HIV/AIDS and bacterial skin infections via beautician practices, tattooing and skin piercing.

Control of Dogs bylaw (PDF, 74.7 kb, new window)
This bylaw covers all aspects of dog control in the City including registration fees, prohibited places for dogs, control of dogs and exercise areas for dogs.

Control of Skateboarding Bylaw (PDF, 336.5 kb, new window)
This bylaw is to make provision for the control of the use of skateboards and similar wheeled devices on footpaths and in public places where a nuisance or injury may be caused to pedestrians or damage caused to property.

Earthworks and signs bylaw (PDF, 17.5 kb, new window)
This bylaw details when a permit is required for earthworks where the existing ground surface is to be changed by more than 600 mm or where more than 10 cubic metres of material is to be moved. The "Signs" section has been repealed.

Fire Prevention bylaw (PDF, 17.7 kb, new window)
The purpose of this bylaw is to provide for the protection of people and property from the risk and spread of vegetation fires.

Food Safety Bylaw (PDF, 60.0 kb, new window)
This bylaw is to make provision for all food workers employed in food premises in the Dunedin City area to have successfully completed a recognised course in food hygiene training. It also enables the Environmental Health Co-ordinator to close food premises where necessary and requires operators to display an inspection grade in a place visible to the public.

This bylaw explains the rules controlling liquor in public places.

Mobile Trading bylaw (PDF, 16.2 kb, new window)
No person may engage in mobile trading without first obtaining a Mobile Trading Licence under this Bylaw. The holder of the licence shall observe the conditions recorded on the licence.

Public Assembly and Entertainments Bylaw (PDF, 24.2 kb, new window)
This part of the Bylaw applies to all buildings or parts of buildings used for public entertainment of any kind.

This bylaw details activities that are prohibited and restricted on City reserves.

Restriction of traffic on part of Halfway Bush Road and Friends Hill Road (PDF, 350.1 kb, new window)
To prevent damage to the access track that links the maintained formations of Halfway Bush Road and Friends Hill Road in order to protect the water main under the track.

Restriction of Traffic Bylaw (PDF, 2.2 mb, new window)
The purpose of this bylaw is to prevent damage to the surface of unformed legal roads.

This bylaw applies to footpaths and roads in Dunedin City.

The purpose of this Bylaw is to regulate the collection and disposal of solid waste in Dunedin City.

Speed Limits Bylaw (PDF, 303.8 kb, new window)
The Local Government Act 2002 and Land Transport Rule allow the Dunedin City Council to make this bylaw to set speed limits as specified in the schedules.

Trade Waste Bylaw (PDF, 633.8 kb, new window)
This Bylaw regulates the discharge of Trade Waste to a Sewerage System operated by the Dunedin City Council.

    This Guideline has been developed to assist in the management of Trade Waste discharges, to explain the responsibilities and requirements under the Trade Waste Bylaws and to assist in the understanding of them.

Traffic and Parking Bylaw (PDF, 61.9 kb, new window)
This bylaw sets out standards and guidelines for parking and traffic related matters in Dunedin City.

This Water Bylaw has been prepared using New Zealand Standard 9201 Model Bylaws which covers various matters under local authority jurisdiction.
