Frequency of bus use

This indicator measures a city that has a public transport system that meets the needs of the users.

Vision

A city with a transport system that supports economic development and where people move about easily and safely.

How are we doing?

In 2006, 22% of Dunedin people used public transport at least once a week. Across the 12 largest cities in New Zealand, the percentage of people using public transport at least once a week was 25%. For New Zealand as a whole it was 18%.

Changes to bus services made by the Otago Regional Council since 2007 have improved the availability and quality of public transport in Dunedin. More frequent services and new additions to the bus fleet, combined with high fuel costs, saw a peak in the use of public transport in 2008.
