How are we doing?
The Quality of Life Report identifies the percentage of local government provided social housing as a proportion of all rented private dwellings.
Wellington had the highest proportion at 10%, followed by Dunedin (8.4%) and Christchurch (7.2%). The remainder of the 12 largest cities all had below 2.5% (3.5% was the average).
The Christchurch City Council owns 2,655 units, Wellington has 2,354 council owned units. At over 900 units, the Dunedin City Council has a higher than average share of rental properties.
