Dunedin City Councillors

The Dunedin City Council is elected every 3 years (with the next election being held in 2010).

The Dunedin City Council elections are currently conducted under the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system. You can find more information about the STV system on the Single Transferable Vote website (new window).

The Council is comprised of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and thirteen other Councillors who represent the following wards: Cargill, Green Island-Saddle Hill, Hills, Mosgiel-Taieri, South Dunedin and Waikouaiti Coast-Chalmers.

The Council is responsible for the governance of, and setting the strategic direction for the city, and ensuring that the Council works towards meeting the community outcomes that it has set for itself through the Long Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP).

The direction and policies set by the Council are then implemented and managed by the Chief Executive through Council staff.

Code of Conduct

The Code of Conduct sets out the values, understandings and expectations agreed amongst members of the Dunedin City Council about the manner in which they conduct themselves while acting in their capacities as elected members. It includes understandings on behaviour towards one another, towards staff and towards the public.

As well as being used to promote ethical behaviours, encourage teamwork and facilitate effective local democracy, the code will be of value to the Council as:

  • An orientation tool for new councillors
  • A guide to prospective candidates
  • A resource support for existing councillors
  • An aid to the public - enabling the public to evaluate behaviour
