Sister Cities

As one of New Zealand's oldest cities, Dunedin has established many useful and valuable links all around the world. Some of those links have been formalised into sister city agreements.

Our earliest agreement was with Portsmouth in the southern US state of Virginia. While this relationship is dormant, the three other sister city agreements are active and proving beneficial to our city in many ways.

Most recently, Shanghai has proven herself to be a proactive and generous sister with the establishment of the Dunedin Chinese Garden just one of the projects that have flourished under this relationship.

The Dunedin City Council contributes approximately $5,000 to the sister city societies, with all other funds raised by the groups themselves.

Sister City Conference coming this way

Dunedin has won the rights to hold the 2010 Sister Cities New Zealand conference to be held in May of that year.

We successfully bid for the conference, which will attract up to 200 visitors from New Zealand and around the world, and will be staged at the Dunedin Centre.

Dunedin's own sister city relationships, in particular with Shanghai, China, and Edinburgh, Scotland, will be shown off during the three-day conference.
